Practical tips


  • approach people in their line of vision and introduce yourself
  • be calm, reassuring and relaxed
  • speak simply and slowly but not patronisingly
  • be a good listener. Even if you don’t understand you can nod. Don’t correct their mistakes, again reassuring words and nods will be helpful
  • ask simple questions and wait for an answer, don’t ask more than one at once
  • use photos or other aids to help conversation


  • Don’t laugh at inappropriate comments or gestures
  • Don’t be embarrassed by displays of emotion
  • Don’t ignore the person who lives with memory loss, or their partner.
