Mod’s Plod Log Day 4: Follow Revd Geoff Felton on his Holy Week Prayer Walk across Mersey Synod

Mods Plod Log.

Day 4. Warrington.

Matt 26:41

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Maundy Thursday marked the final day of the Mod’s Plod and it was also the shortest only being five miles.

We met at Thomas Risley Church in Birchwood where we were greeted with pouring rain and grey skies. Having prayed for the local church and community we set off. As we did we did so with resolve and determination not to allow the weather to put us off or distract us from our journey. We crossed the M6 and stopping off enroute we prayed for a pioneer minister and his family as we walked past their house. We also prayed for all those living in a retirement home as we walked past it.

At Elmwood Avenue Church we were greeted by a friendly bunch of pilgrims who joined us on our way across town to Wycliffe URC in Warrington town centre where yet more people met us and joined up for the short walk across town to St. Johns URC.

We arrived at St. Johns Church just in time to join them for their Maundy Thursday Tenebrae service where we shared communion.

Despite the weather the final leg of the journey was joyful and heart warming. Conversations were rich and the prayer was heartfelt as we lifted the churches and the town of Warrington to God.

The continuing theme was a rediscovery of the joy and power of prayer and during the Tenebrae service I was struck by Jesus’ words to watch and pray from Matthew 26. This is a call for the church of today to try to see the world from Christ’s perspective and to pray for it, for peace, justice and salvation to come to those in need.

Heavenly Father thank you for the joy of prayer.

Thank you that though prayer you speak, guide, lead and transform our lives.

Instill in us a desire to pray not just for ourselves but for those in need of hope.

May we recognise your transformational power and love and may we take the risen Christ into this world through the faith you instill in us.

In Christs name we pray.

Amen.
