Any kind of grant funding is usually provided to fund a project. A project is a discreet, time limited piece of work that has specific objectives/goals that the delivery of the project will aim to achieve. Projects can be any type of activity: new buildings, extensions, refurbishment, building repairs, community activity, youth or outreach workers. The key things that these all have is that they are delivered within a set time period and are delivered to achieve a specific aim.
