The United Reformed Church in Vicars Cross recently celebrated a major milestone, marking 60 years since its founding in the community.

On the weekend of 28–29th June, 2025, the church opened its doors and gardens to welcome the entire Vicars Cross community. The celebrations showcased the many ways in which God has been at work in the life of the church over the past six decades. The Lord Mayor of Chester, Clir Sherin Akhtar and Clir Elizabeth MacGlashen also attended along with local Parish Councillors.

Throughout the weekend, visitors engaged with a variety of activities for all ages. A timeline, photographs and banners told the story of the church’s journey, highlighting its past, present, and hopes for the future. Above all, the event reaffirmed the church’s message that it is here for the whole community.

Sheila Cook, Secretary, URC Vicars Cross, and a member of the planning team commented: “Everyone has a role in sharing God’s love. Our mission, ‘Exploring the Good News of God’s Love with the Community,’ came to life in every conversation and encounter.”

The open day on Saturday, 28th June brought together longtime members, former attendees, and many new faces. The church community expressed joy at the sense of connection and discovery throughout the day. “The church is not just a building, it’s the people,” one organiser reflected. “If even one person left knowing they are loved by God, that made it all worthwhile.”

A Mersey Synod Mission Grant together with a grant from the local council members, was used to make the church look inviting and welcoming with colourful banners and signage. It also covered welcome gifts, including pens and booklets with church information, and bibles were on offer to every visitor, and a buffet for the community.

A community buffet at a local pub closed the day’s celebrations, offering a heartfelt thank you to volunteers and a space for new friendships to form.

On Sunday, 29th June, the Moderator and Interim Moderator led a special worship service, giving thanks for all God has done and praying for the future. The service also honoured those who helped make the church a welcoming and faithful presence in Vicars Cross over the past 60 years.

With prayers, planning, and community spirit behind every detail, the anniversary weekend was a powerful celebration of faith, belonging, and hope for what’s still to come.

Thank you, Lord, for sending the sunshine too.
