Highlights from the Mersey Synod Autumn Meeting 2025: Living Faith, Our Journey Continues

Members of the Mersey Synod gathered at St Stephen’s URC for the Autumn Synod Meeting. It was a day filled with prayer, reflection, and celebration of all that God is doing in our churches and communities.
Opening Worship and Welcome
The day began with an opening prayer and warm welcome from our Moderator, Revd Geoff Felton, who reminded us that as we “press on together with God beside us,” we are called to live our faith in ways that are tangible, bringing hope and life to those around us.
Bible Study
Revd James Green (Together Liverpool) led our Bible Study on the Synod’s theme, Living Faith: Our Journey Continues, exploring how the call to justice lies at the very heart of scripture:
“Read the scriptures, justice is running at the centre of all of them.”
He encouraged us to build communities “where everyone is able to flourish.”
Music, Worship, and Celebration
Revd Malcolm Garforth-Fife led us in joyful music and song throughout the day, lifting hearts and voices in worship.
A special moment came as the Moderator introduced our new Synod staff, including our Property and Safeguarding Officers, and welcomed our new Synod Clerk, Lorna Griffiths, with a service of induction.
Honouring Service and Dedication
The Synod also celebrated the achievements of three new Assembly Accredited Lay Preachers, Pat Cansfield, Helen Bennett, and Gail Rose, who received their certificates from the Moderator.
A Long Service Award was also presented to Gwynfor Evans, recognising faithful commitment to ministry and mission over the past 50 years.
Inspiring Voices from Our Community
Our new Synod Youth Representative, Emma Jackson, shared her enthusiasm for her new role, encouraging young people to have confidence in their faith and voice within the church.
We also heard from John Griffiths of Christian Aid, who updated us on ongoing efforts for global justice and compassion.
The Lundie Memorial Award
Steven Mitchell (CYDO) shared uplifting news about the latest Lundie Memorial Award, presented to James Ineichen from Christ Church, Port Sunlight.
James plays a key role in Messy Church and Sunday live-streaming. his dedication and warmth have made him a beloved part of his church family.
The Lundie Award recognises children and young people who use their God-given gifts to bless others, offering a medal, certificate, and £100 grant to support ministry among young people.
So far, five Mersey children and young people have received this national award, and Steven encouraged everyone to nominate more inspiring young disciples.
Living Faith in Everyday Life
In his reflection, Revd Stuart Radcliffe invited us to consider “Living Faith in the Moment” through the simple but powerful question: “Where will your faith take you this time tomorrow?”
Reflections and Good News
Revd Tim Meadows, reflecting on his time as General Assembly Moderator, spoke warmly about the depth of faith and unity he witnessed across the URC:
“We’re a huge tradition, and you see that around the world.”
“I was so encouraged by how plugged into their faith people are and amazed by the expressions of faith I witnessed.”
“Part of my message was to encourage and celebrate.”
The Synod also enjoyed sharing Good News from our churches, including successful and busy prayer groups at Prenton URC, new congregation members at Formby following involvement with Beavers, Scouts and Cubs, the highest attendance yet at Vicar’s Cross URC’s Wednesday Club for kids with basketball hoops recently installed from Lundie Award funding, and Blundellsands and Crosby URC celebrating the miracle of a returning minister, Revd Keith Hulse and the busy atmosphere of Sunday — StoryHouse
This also featured highlights from the Isle of Man Retreat and Church Development Sessions led by Emma Howarth (Training Development Officer).
Looking Ahead
As the meeting ended, the Moderator expressed heartfelt thanks to all who contributed, musicians, speakers, staff, and delegates, before offering a final blessing.
It was a thought-provoking end to a day full of encouragement, faith, and shared purpose.
The Mersey Synod will reconvene on Saturday, 14th March 2026, at St John’s URC, Wilderspool Causeway, Warrington (10am–4pm).
