Christ Church URC Haydock’s Bible Study Group, Holy Habits, has been putting their studies into action through work with local schools and with the support of the local Amazon depot.

Brian Taylor, an Elder at Christ Church URC Haydock, explains:

“One of the areas we felt we should get involved with was vulnerable families. Four years ago, we contacted the four local schools, one senior and three juniors, and asked if we could help the vulnerable families in their schools. We did not need to know names, nor expected them to reveal them. They were delighted.

“Since then, at Easter and Christmas we give the schools presents to give out. Last Easter we gave out bags with an Easter egg, a new pair of pyjamas, an Easter card and a booklet about the Easter Story. This Christmas, we are giving a rucksack each, in each will be a pencil case filled with pencils, rubbers etc, a selection box, a Christmas card and a booklet about the Nativity story.

“An Amazon Community Officer attended a Christ Church URC Café Church Service when invited by a friend who is a church member.  As I was using magic tricks to tell Gospel stories, the Amazon Community Worker became involved in the activity and interested in the story and then the wider work of the church.

“The local Amazon depot then paid for our community BBQ. They also paid for a bouncy castle, an assault course and the food and drink. Invitations were sent out to the schools and on posters for anyone else who wanted to come as part of our Messy Church. As a result, over 165 people attended.

“Four weeks ago, I got a message from Amazon saying they had 100 rucksacks filled with stationary school stuff, that they would like to give us, as part of our schools’ work. We had 25 rucksacks are going to the senior school, 75 to the junior schools. These were given out this December.”

A bike was also donated to the church and given to a local school pupil (photo below)
