Faith in Action: Unity and Dialogue Across the Region

Leaders of faith communities across Merseyside gathered this week, continuing a tradition that began in 2018. Twice a year, representatives from Christian denominations, including Catholic, Anglican, Free Churches, and leaders from Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Baha'i communities come together to strengthen relationships and share a common purpose.

These meetings are a space for collaboration, where faith groups identify shared concerns and offer a unified voice to regional agencies seeking guidance. The Faith Leaders Network has become a vital part of civic life in the Liverpool City Region, offering insight, support and action throughout the year.

At the heart of these gatherings is friendship. Faith leaders are proud to know one another and to stand together. Their commitment to peace, justice and mutual respect is unwavering, and they speak out against hate speech and discrimination in all its forms.

This week’s meeting, hosted by the Vice Chancellor of Liverpool Hope University, was filled with thoughtful contributions. Revd Geoff Felton, Moderator of the URC Mersey Synod, was among those attending. Sarah Thwaites, representing the Buddhist community, raised an important question about End of Life care and invited reflections from others as the NHS prepares to commission new services. Ken McCabe spoke passionately about the role of chaplaincy in prisons and the wider community. Inspector Ian Speed from Merseyside Police joined the conversation, expressing a strong desire to build closer ties with faith groups.

As ever, the evening was a reminder of what can be achieved when people of different traditions come together with open hearts and shared purpose. The Faith Leaders Network continues to be a beacon of cooperation and hope across the region.
